It’s not unusual for foldable devices to be bulky. After all, they’re basically two devices on top of one another and connected by a hinge. So yeah, they can be thick like a brick.
But Xiaomi’s latest foldable is a work of engineering wonder. The Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is thin: it measures 11.2mm when closed and only 5.4mm when unfolded. For comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4 measures 15.8mm when folded and 6.3mm when unfolded. Meanwhile, the device weighs 262g, which is a hair lighter than the Z Fold4’s 263g.
To achieve this, Xiaomi refined the hinge and equipped the MIX Fold 2 with the company’s self-developed Micro Waterdrop Hinge. This new hinge features a smaller bending radius, thinner screen modules, and customized mini rotating hinge. It also utilizes an integrated solder-free precision process to create a carbon fiber double-wing floating panel.
In addition, both sides of the hinge use space stacking technology, and use large hidden spaces on both sides of the hinge for soft boards, achieving a 20% increase in space utilization and thereby offering the 5.4mm flat design with balanced weight distribution.
The MIX Fold 2 is Xiaomi’s second phone after the Xiaomi 12S Ultra to feature a Leica-branded camera system. The triple camera setup is composed of a 50MP megapixel Sony IMX766 main sensor with optical image stabilization, a 13MP ultrawide-angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom and portrait capabilities. The device can also shoot 8K videos and record in Dolby Vision HDR format. There’s also a 20-megapixel hole-punch camera in the front for selfies.
In addition to the Leica-certified Summicron lens, the MIX Fold 2 offers access to two photographic styles: the “Leica Authentic Look” and “Leica Vibrant Look,” both offering enhanced creative freedom to the photographer.
The outer display is a 6.56-inch Samsung E5 AMOLED with a 21:9 aspect ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection. The inner screen, on the other hand, is an 8.02-inch Eco LTPO2 OLED display that offers a 2K+ resolution, a variable refresh rate up to 120Hz, an under-display fingerprint scanner, and Schott UTG glass for added sturdiness.
The MIX Fold 2 is powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC flagship chipset, with 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of internal storage.
