This September, Sunshine Place, a community center under the Felicidad T. Sy Foundation, marks its 10th anniversary. For a decade, it has been a haven for seniors and their families, offering a space for creativity, friendship, and overall well-being.
Members and instructors shared their experiences at the center, highlighting the positive impact it has had on their lives.
Tess Castaneda, 74, described Sunshine Place as her “happy place,” where she has discovered hidden talents and made lasting friendships.
Conchitina Sevilla Bernardo, a former ambassador’s wife, found her creative outlet in the center’s painting classes. She shared heartwarming stories of bonding with her granddaughters over their shared passion for art.

Linda Atayde, a former bank executive and later executive director of SM Foundation, also discovered her artistic side through Ikebana flower arrangement classes and other creative pursuits.
Many members were also surprised to find their voice in writing workshops at the Sunshine Place, especially those conducted by Oscar Penaranda and Dr. Joem Antonio.
Writing workshops have been another popular activity at Sunshine Place. Dr. Joem Antonio, a renowned playwright and short story writer, has conducted workshops at the center, inspiring members to explore their own voices and share their stories.

Oscar Penaranda, a writer and educator based abroad, has also contributed to the center’s writing programs.
Chit Mijares Chua, who has taken writing workshops under Mr. Oscar and Ms. Barbara Gonzales says she likes the quiet joy and lightness of Sunshine Place. “Confidence, productive me-time, courage to step out of the box, peace, gaining a friend or two. Sunshine Place gives me those,” she says.
Music therapy has also played a significant role in the lives of Sunshine Place members. Czarina Cruel, a music therapy instructor, shared how the center has become her second home, providing a space for healing and connection through music.

One of her students, Harvey Chua says that Sunshine Place brings the sunshine in her life especially since her husband’s passing six years ago. Here, she meets up with friends and gets involved in activities to make her life more enjoyable.

Sunshine Place also offers a variety of activities, including dancing, meditation, fitness classes, and more.
Sunshine Place is located at 56 Jupiter Street, Bgy. Bel Air, Makati.
