Kids aren’t just playing games online—they’re socializing there, too, and that’s raising more safety concerns. Roblox Corporation’s new age-based accounts aim to make those spaces safer and more appropriate for different age groups.
Starting in early June, Roblox will roll out two new account types—Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 8 and Roblox Select for ages 9 to 15—designed to better match what kids can see, who they can talk to, and how parents can manage their experience. Roblox is also establishing an ongoing selection process for games available to users under 16.
The update comes as Roblox, the world’s largest gaming platform for kids with more than 151 million daily users, faces growing criticism over whether it has done enough to protect minors from predators and inappropriate content. In the Philippines, authorities have also raised concerns about children encountering harmful interactions online.
The latest update builds on earlier safety measures introduced this year, including the platform’s requirement for facial age verification to access chat features. Since its implementation, more than half of global daily users and 65 percent of US users have completed an age check.
Under the new framework, Roblox will integrate age verification, account-level defaults, content ratings, ongoing moderation, and expanded parental controls into a unified system. The company says that age-verified users under 16 will still have access to most popular games at launch, while users 16 and older will see no change to their experience.

- Roblox Kids Accounts (Ages 5–8)
- Children aged 5 to 8 will be automatically placed into Roblox Kids accounts, based on Roblox’s age-check system or parent verification. These accounts will only show a regularly updated selection of approved games.
- For these accounts, access will be limited to games rated “Minimal” or “Mild” that pass Roblox’s selection process. Chat and communication features will be turned off by default, and the app will use a distinct color theme to show the account type.
- Roblox Select Accounts (Ages 9–15)
- Roblox Select accounts are designed for users aged 9 to 15, based on age verification or parent confirmation. These accounts will provide access to a regularly updated library of approved games.
- For this group, players can access games rated up to “Moderate” that pass Roblox’s selection process. Default chat settings will remain unchanged, and the app will include a visual design that clearly identifies the account type.
The system will automatically transition users as they age—moving them from Kids to Select accounts at age 9, and to standard accounts at 16. Users who have not completed age verification will face stricter limitations, including restricted game access and disabled communication.

Roblox will use an ongoing review system to decide which games younger users can see. This includes verifying developers, watching how older players interact with new games, and reviewing reports from users. Games with sensitive topics, social spaces, or open-ended drawing features will generally be left out.
Later this year, Roblox will start transitioning to the International Age Rating Coalition framework, which standardizes content ratings across regions.
Roblox is also giving parents more control over their child’s experience, including the ability to block certain games, manage chat settings until age 15, and approve specific games that would normally be restricted. The goal is to give parents more say while keeping safety settings turned on by default.
