Every year, workers around the world send billions home, and in 2024, global remittances are expected to top $900 billion. Countries like India, Mexico, China, and the Philippines rely on this money not just for imports and currency stability, but to keep millions of families afloat—paying for food, healthcare, education, and even small businesses.

But here’s the catch: sending money through traditional banks is slow and expensive, meaning less of that hard-earned cash actually reaches loved ones.

Stablecoins—digital currencies pegged to fiat assets like the US dollar—are rapidly transforming this landscape. The combined market capitalization of the largest stablecoins, USDC and USDT, reached over $260 billion in 2025, doubling since 2023. Analysts predict the stablecoin market could soar to $2 trillion by 2028, driven by payment use cases and growing institutional adoption.

In the Philippines, Coins.ph, the country’s pioneering crypto exchange, has expanded stablecoin infrastructure through partnerships with companies like BCRemit, Hashkey, Hi-Globe, and FinFan. These collaborations create compliant, near-instant payment corridors between major sending markets—including Hong Kong, Vietnam, the UK, the US, Canada, and the EU—and the Philippines, bypassing costly bank intermediaries.

“We are aggressively supporting stablecoin remittances because they solve the fundamental problems of cost and time that plague millions of migrant workers. Stablecoins offer a pathway to near-instant, compliant transfers at a fraction of the current cost, ensuring more of that hard-earned funds reaches home. This isn’t just an improvement—it’s the potential for a massive, equitable shift that truly empowers the Filipino diaspora,” said Wei Zhou, Coins.ph Chief Executive Officer.

Here are the five ways stablecoin remittances are improving cross-border payments, particularly for emerging markets:

  1. Lower transaction costs: Traditional remittance fees average 6.62% globally, often burdening the poorest families. Stablecoins can reduce fees to under 1%, ensuring more money reaches recipients.
  2. Near-instant settlements: Unlike banks, which take 3–5 business days, stablecoin transfers finalize within minutes, operating 24/7/365, providing timely support for families in need.
  3. Financial inclusion: Stablecoins require only a mobile device and digital wallet. This gives unbanked populations in rural and underserved areas access to global finance.
  4. Mitigation of foreign exchange (FX) risk and opacity: Pegged to fiat currencies like USD, stablecoins protect remittances from volatile exchange rates and hidden fees.
  5. Programmable financial services: Stablecoins enable advanced applications such as automated micropayments, real-time payroll, and conditional transfers. This enhances transparency and efficiency for businesses and workers alike.

Stablecoin remittances are more than a technological upgrade; they represent a fundamental restructuring of global finance, delivering savings, speed, and inclusivity to millions of families worldwide. As regulatory framerworks solidify, mainstream adoption will accelerate, ensuring migrant workers retain more of their hard-earned money and send it home faster than ever before.
