For many of today’s Filipino teens, YouTube is part of everyday life. It’s their online tambayan—a place to study, relax, and stay entertained all in one. From exam reviews to vlogs, podcasts, and sports highlights, the platform plays a central role in their daily routines. Now, YouTube is rolling out new features aimed at helping parents manage their children’s screen time without added complexity.
One feature is called Shorts Timer, a tool that gives parents more say over how long teens spend watching short-form videos. Need your child to focus on homework? Parents can set the timer to zero. Heading out on a long road trip or enjoying a lazy weekend? The limit can be adjusted to allow more time. YouTube says parents will soon even be able to lock Shorts access permanently at zero if that’s what works best for their family.
YouTube is also adding more flexibility to its existing wellness features. For teens using supervised accounts, parents can now customize Bedtime and Break reminders to hep encourage better sleep and healthier screen habits.
Understanding that many Filipino families share phones or tablets, YouTube is also making account switching much simpler. In the coming weeks, parents will be able to set up accounts for their kids more easily and switch between family profiles in the mobile app with just a few taps. This means each child—from younger kids to older teens—gets content recommendations and settings that actually match their age.
On the content side, YouTube is introducing new principles and a guide for creators to help steer teens toward content that is fun, age-appropriate, and high-quality. Created with experts (including the American Psychological Association and Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab), these principles help highlight educational and inspiring channels such as Khan Academy, CrashCourse, and TED-Ed.
