Starting July 25, MRT-3 commuters can now tap their Mastercard credit, debit, or prepaid cards at designated turnstiles—ushering in a new era of cashless, contactless commuting in Metro Manila.

Riders can simply tap their cards or compatible e-wallets on NFC-enabled Android smartphones at designated contactless turnstiles, eliminating the need for cash or dedicated transit cards. This milestone positions Metro Manila alongside global cities like London, Sydney, and Singapore, where open-loop transit systems are fast becoming the standard.

Open-loop systems allow passengers to use existing bank-issued cards and digital wallets, reducing friction, improving accessibility, and cutting down waiting times. The new system also benefits from Mastercard’s advanced fraud protection, ensuring a safe and secure ride for all users.

In 2024, Mastercard became the first international payment network to introduce “Tap & Go” on public transport in Metro Manila.
