Commuters in Taguig City now have an easier way to pay for their rides on BGC buses. Just tap your Mastercard—whether it’s prepaid, debit, or credit—on the bus validator, and your fare is covered, no cash or physical tickets needed.

This initiative, a collaboration between Mastercard and AF Payments Inc. (AFPI), expands the existing payment options available via beep cards and beep QR codes. It the first phase of a pilot program that aligns with the government’s goal of accelerating digital payments adoption across various sectors, including transportation.

Future phases of the program will introduce contactless payments across other transit systems, including EDSA buses and MRT Line 3.

The introduction of contactless payments in the Metro Manila’s public transport system will help drive the adoption of digital payments among Filipinos for everyday transactions. Not only does it make transactions easier, but it also promises a smoother, more efficient travel experience.

When commuters use their Mastercard cards to pay, they benefit from advanced security features that protect against risks like card skimming and fraud. Mastercard’s cybersecurity systems use tools such as identity verification, machine learning, behavioral analytics, and AI to keep payments safe. Over the last five years, Mastercard has invested $7 billion in cybersecurity and AI to ensure strong security standards.

Mastercard has already helped bring open-loop transit systems to cities like London, Sydney, and Singapore, using its expertise to improve the commuter experience and public transportation systems. Now, it’s the first international payment network to introduce “Tap & Go” on public transport in Metro Manila.
