Earlier this year, we spent some time with the vivo V27 5G and loved every minute with it. That’s why we were excited to get our hands on its successor, the vivo V29 5G

The all-new vivo V29 5G takes all the great things from the V27—Aura Light, AMOLED display, fast charging speeds, and powerful processors, among others—and makes them better.

Let’s take a closer look at the vivo V29 5G and see what it has to offer.

Design & construction

The vivo V29 5G looks similar to the V27 in terms of the overall design–and we love it! It has the same slim form factor at 7.46mm, a glass back panel, and subtle branding.

The button and port placement are also the same, with the volume and power key located on the right side of the phone. At the bottom, we have the USB-C port, SIM card slot, and a downward-firing speaker.

The very few design changes made here are the arrangement of the lenses at the back. You’ll now find the improved Aura Light positioned below two lenses, while another flash and lens sit together at the side.

vivo also updated the color variants for the V29 5G model. You have a choice between Starry Purple and Magic Maroon. Our review unit comes in the Magic Maroon colorway, which looks elegant from all angles. What’s magic, pun intended, is that it changes color to a darker shade when hit by sunlight or UV light. Like in the V27, this variant is photochromic thanks to the Color Changing Fluorite AG Glass and nano-scale photoetching technique.

The vivo V29 5G is also IP54 dust- and water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry too much when you’re using it as a daily driver. In the box, the unit comes with a free jelly case, SIM card ejector, charging cable, power brick, and the usual documents.

Display & multimedia

Like the earlier series, the vivo V29 5G carries a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED screen. With its 3D curved design, the phone retains its sleek form but is still able to provide an expansive viewing experience. You get a bright display that offers vibrant colors and deep blacks so images come out with good contrast.

The display in the V29 5G boasts the same 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ certification. This allows for a smooth transition between apps and snappy navigation of the menus. Playing graphics-heavy games like PUBG, Genshin Impact, and Mobile Legends also maximizes this feature.

The V29 5G also has Genuine Eye Protection on its screen. This reduces harmful blue light and screen flickering so you can use the phone for longer periods.

What’s new with the V29’s display is that it now comes with a higher 2800 x 1260px resolution. Viewing images and watching videos are a delight on this screen.

The single loudspeaker remains the same in terms of quality. It is decent enough to work with the gorgeous screen. However, using earphones is highly recommended if you want a better watching and playing experience.

Aside from the design, the camera is one of the great things about this phone.

vivo did not change much on the hardware front; the V29 5G still carries a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP monochrome shooter. With the same camera configuration, we got the same quality as with the V27. Photos come out great in various lighting conditions.

Perhaps the biggest upgrade here is on the Aura Light 2.0 system. vivo improves this feature by adding options for the color temperature. With the Smart Color Temperature Adjustment, you now have the option to choose either cool or warm lighting for your portraits.

There are a few more improvements on the software side, including the OIS + EIS hybrid image stabilization, Super Night Video mode, and additional modes like Food and Supermoon (10x zoom).

On the front of the device is a 50MP front snapper that takes bright and wide photos.

Inside the V29 5G is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset, which is capable of handling power-intensive games and simultaneous use of multiple apps.

This phone comes with 12GB RAM–you can also virtually expand this by up to 8GB. For data storage, there’s an option for a 256GB ROM or a 512GB one.

Meanwhile, the Funtouch 13 (Android 13 base) is very intuitive and easy to use. Those who like to play with different themes and layouts will enjoy the customization that the operating system offers.

The 4600mAh battery may be smaller than what’s usual for phones in this segment, but we never noticed it at all during the review period. The vivo V9 5G lasted long enough for us to enjoy watching episodes of our favorite series, have fun outside all day long, or enjoy browsing and reading our social media feeds. Charging the phone also takes little time with the help of the 80W FlashCharge feature.

Pricing & availability

The vivo V29 5G comes in two configurations with the following prices:

  • 12GB RAM + 512GB ROM: P26,999
  • 12GB RAM + 256GB ROM: P24,999

It is available in all vivo Concept Stores, dealers, and kiosks nationwide. You can also get them online on Shopee, Lazada, TikTok, and the vivo website.

Speed says

If you missed out on buying the vivo V27 5G and would like to own a gorgeous, sleek device, you’re better off getting the vivo V29 5G instead. The V29 5G upgrades all the best features of its predecessor to give users a more refined smartphone experience. We are still in love with the slim form factor, immersive screen, and powerful cameras.
