Roblox is making it easier for families to manage online safety with the global launch of Roblox Kids and Roblox Select, two new account types that adjust games, social features, and protections based on a user’s age.
The new system—tested earlier in Australia, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and New Zealand—automatically places children and teens into age-appropriate account categories. This allows users to access thousands of games while ensuring safety features and social tools are tailored to their developmental stage.
The move is part of Roblox’s broader effort to help children gradually gain digital independence as they grow, while ensuring parents remain informed and involved.
Roblox Kids accounts, designed for younger users, come with the platform’s strictest default safety settings, including chat being turned off. Parents can choose to adjust some of these settings through parental controls.
Roblox Select accounts, intended for older children and younger teens, provide access to slightly more mature content and gradually introduce chat features, while retaining protections and parental oversight.
Users aged 16 and older can access a standard Roblox account only after completing an age check through government ID verification or secure Facial Age Estimation technology.
To qualify for Roblox Kids and Roblox Select catalogs, games undergo additional scrutiny beyond Roblox’s standard moderation process. Developers must verify their identity, enable two-factor authentication, and either purchase a Roblox subscription or pay a refundable publishing fee. Games are also subject to ongoing evaluations and reviews of gameplay and user reports.
Roblox said games containing social hangout features, free-form drawing tools, or sensitive subject matter will not be included in the Kids or Select catalogs. Roblox Moments, a feature that allows users to share gameplay clips, will also be unavailable to Kids and Select accounts at launch.
The company is further tightening social interactions across the platform. Users who have not completed an age check cannot chat on Roblox, regardless of age. In addition, social media links can only be viewed or shared by age-verified users aged 16 or older across profiles, game pages, community spaces, and creator tools.

What controls do parents have?
Parents who link their Roblox account to their child’s account can access a range of parental controls tailored to different age groups.
For children aged 5 to 8, parents can choose whether to enable in-game text chat. If enabled, children can only chat with users in similar age groups or with approved Trusted Friends. Chat remains protected by text filters, message rephrasing tools, and monitoring systems designed to detect child exploitation.
Until a child turns 13, parents can view their friend list, block or report users, manage Trusted Friend requests, and set screen-time and spending limits. Parents can also control chat settings and decide which games their child can access until age 16.
For teens aged 16 to 18, parental controls become less restrictive, but parents can still stay informed through spending notifications and insights into their teen’s screen time and friend list activity.
