Rising fuel prices and tighter household budgets are prompting more Filipinos to consider electric motorcycles, but making the switch involves more than comparing sticker prices. With more manufacturers entering the local market—including Vietnamese EV maker VinFast, which is set to launch its electric motorcycles in the Philippines this month—buyers now have more options than ever.
Before committing to an e-motorcycle, experts say it’s worth looking beyond range and performance to determine whether a model can meet the demands of everyday riding in the Philippines.
One of the first things to check is the brand’s ownership ecosystem. An electric motorcycle is only as practical as the support behind it, making dealership access, after-sales service, warranty coverage, and charging or battery-swapping options important considerations.
VinFast, for instance, says it will begin operations with 28 dealerships nationwide equipped to provide after-sales support, aiming to make the transition to electric mobility easier for first-time buyers.
Another factor is the total cost of ownership. While electric motorcycles typically cost less to operate than gasoline-powered models, buyers should also understand how battery costs are handled. Some manufacturers bundle the battery with the vehicle, while others offer subscription programs that reduce the upfront purchase price.
VinFast adopts the latter approach, allowing customers to subscribe to a battery service that includes access to its battery-swapping network while keeping initial ownership costs lower. Home charging remains available for riders who prefer it.
As an introductory offer, customers who subscribe on or before September 30, 2026 will receive 12 months of free battery subscription for one battery and up to 20 free battery swaps per month, further reducing the cost of ownership during the first year. The company estimates its electric motorcycles can save owners between P40,000 and P70,000 over five years compared with similarly positioned gasoline-powered models, depending on usage and prevailing fuel and electricity prices.
Filipino riders should also consider how an electric motorcycle performs in local road and weather conditions. Frequent rains and occasional flooding make water resistance a key feature, particularly for commuters. VinFast’s Viper, for example, features an IP67-rated motor and controller system designed to withstand wet conditions.
Finally, buyers should match an electric motorcycle to their daily routine. Entry-level models such as the VinFast EVO are designed for commuters seeking longer range, while the Feliz II prioritizes everyday practicality with its step-through design and flat floorboard. Riders looking for a sportier option may find the Viper more suitable, thanks to its higher output, TFT display, and added convenience features.
Choosing the right model ultimately comes down to balancing ownership costs, after-sales support, durability, and real-world usability. Looking beyond the price tag can help ensure an electric motorcycle is a practical long-term investment for everyday commuting.
