One moment it’s bright and sunny, and a few hours later you’re caught in a downpour with no umbrella in sight. In a country where weather can change quickly, checking the forecast before heading out has become less of a habit and more of a necessity.
That’s where the new PANaHON mobile app from the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) comes in.
Short for “PAGASA National Hydro-Meteorological Observing Network,” PANaHON gives users access to near real-time weather information, forecasts, and alerts straight from the state weather bureau.
One of its key features is an interactive weather map that allows users to monitor conditions across the Philippines, including rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind speed, heat index, and atmospheric pressure. The platform draws data from PAGASA’s nationwide network of Automatic Weather Stations and Synoptic Stations.
For most users, the app’s forecast tools will likely be the biggest draw. PANaHON provides hourly forecasts and a five-day weather outlook for saved locations, making it easy to check conditions at home, work, school, or anywhere else you plan to be before stepping out the door.
Planning a trip? There’s a Tourist Locations tab that allows users to compare weather forecasts for popular destinations before deciding where and when to go. It also sends location-based notifications for tropical cyclone bulletins, thunderstorm and heavy rainfall warnings, and flood advisories, helping users stay informed wherever they are.
No forecast can guarantee sunshine all day, but PANaHON makes it easier for Filipinos to stay informed, plan ahead, and adapt when the weather has other plans.
