The back-to-school season is a busy time, but for Filipino households living on a single income, the real financial challenge begins after enrollment. Covering weekly allowances, transportation, school projects, groceries, and household bills with one paycheck calls for careful budgeting—or what Filipinos simply call diskarte.

To help families manage these demands, UnionDigital Bank (UD) spoke with resourceful members of the Ka-UD community to share four practical tips for making the most of a single income with the help of digital banking tools.

1. Upgrade to a “Digital Envelope System”

For many Filipino families, the traditional envelope system remains a trusted budgeting method, with cash divided into separate envelopes for groceries, bills, and school expenses. CJ Ramos, a TNVS driver and content creator, says the approach helps keep their finances on track.

“Sa budget, ang diskarte namin ay ‘envelope system.’ Hiwalay agad ang baon ng mga bata, pambayad ng bills, at groceries sa simula pa lang ng buwan para hindi magalaw,” CJ shares.

While effective, keeping large amounts of cash at home can expose families to risks such as loss, theft, or the temptation to dip into funds intended for other expenses. UnionDigital Bank recommends adopting a digital version of the envelope system by setting aside money in a high-yield savings account such as UD Save, allowing funds to remain secure, accessible, and interest-earning.

2. Focus on what is needed first

For parents raising multiple school-aged children, replacing every school item annually is often impractical. Instead, careful planning and prioritizing essential purchases can help reduce expenses.

Families are encouraged to inventory reusable items before shopping and consider buying frequently used school supplies in bulk with other parents to take advantage of discounts.

3. Avoid unnecessary transaction fees

Small transaction fees may seem insignificant individually, but they can accumulate over time and eat into a family’s limited budget.

UnionDigital Bank recommends using zero-fee payment services, such as its Unli-Free InstaPay transfers and QR payment options, enabling parents to purchase school supplies or send allowances without incurring additional transfer charges.

4. Set aside money for unexpected school expenses

Unexpected school-related costs—from projects to field trips—can strain household finances without advance preparation.

CJ says maintaining a dedicated emergency fund has helped his family manage unforeseen expenses.

“Nalalampasan namin ito sa pamamagitan ng pagkakaroon ng maliit na emergency fund para sa school expenses para hindi kami mabigla.”

Arlene follows a similar approach. “Sinisigurado naming may nakalaang budget kada linggo para hindi maubos agad ang pera,” she adds.

UnionDigital Bank advises families to save a fixed amount regularly in a secure savings account, such as UD Save, where funds can remain accessible while earning interest over time.
