As the world celebrates Earth Day 2025, SM Supermalls is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability as a continuous lifestyle, not just a one-day commitment. Through innovative programs, eco-friendly infrastructure, and active community engagement, SM’s malls are evolving into leading platforms that promote greener living for all.
“Our malls are more than shopping destinations—they’re spaces where people and the planet can thrive together,” said Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Program Director of SM Cares for Environment. “Through programs that are easy to join, SM makes it possible for every visitor to take part in a more sustainable future.”
Here are seven ways for the public to participate in environmental responsibility at SM malls:
1. Plug in your EV for free. With 123 EV charging stations across 69 malls and plans for 50 more in 2025, SM has already provided over 14,500 kWh of clean electricity.

2. Walk into solar-powered spaces. Forty-seven SM malls and properties utilize solar energy, generating 27.6GWh of clean energy in 2024, which is equivalent to taking over 4,100 cars off the road. SM aims for 100MWp rooftop solar capacity by 2027.

3. Experience greener malls with natural lighting. Natural lighting through sky gardens and skylights, coupled with LED lighting and motion sensor escalators, enhance energy efficiency throughout SM malls. SM also contributes 110MW of capacity to the Department of Energy’s Interruptible Load Program.

4. Support a waste-free future. Launched in 2023, the #SMWasteFreeFuture campaign promotes proper waste segregation with RDC (recyclable, disposable, compostable) bins for tenants and fosters a sustainability culture among employees.

5. Turn trash into treasure. Held every first Friday and Saturday of the month, the Trash-to-Cash recycling market has helped exchange over 1 million kilograms of recyclables for cash. You may bring paper, plastic, metal, or even old appliances—and exchange them for cash.

6. Recycle smarter with plastic and e-waste collection. Drop-off points at 15 SM malls and Cyberzone areas have diverted 63,874kg of plastics and over 11,000kg of e-waste from landfills through partnerships with Friends of Hope and Smart/PLDT.

7. Join coastal cleanups. In 2024, over 27,000 volunteers across 15 SM malls helped collect more than 157,000kg of trash from coastlines, and waterways.

From facilitating EV adoption to large-scale coastal cleanups, SM Supermalls underscores that every small sustainable action contributes to a significant positive impact. At SM, Earth Day isn’t just April 22—it’s every day.
