vivo is back with another smartphone offering that is geared toward younger users who love to explore and have fun.

Meet the vivo Y36, a midrange device with big storage and RAM, large battery capacity with fast-charging capabilities, and a high refresh rate display.

Let’s take a closer look at this new vivo phone.

Design & construction

Opening the box, we see the vivo Y36 unit and a clear plastic protective case. Also included are the charging cable and brick, as well as a SIM ejector pin.

The vivo Y36 in Glitter Aqua is an eye candy with its light green color and sparkly finish. There’s a Meteor Black variant but it does not have the same crystallized effect.

The AG Glass back panel adds to the solid build; it’s also more fingerprint-resistant so you can use it without a case. Also on the rear is the slightly protruding square camera module that features a dual-lens setup and a flash. If you remember, the Y35 has three rear camera lenses (more on this below).

All the buttons sit on the right side of the phone. The power key, which sits below the volume rocker, also doubles as a side fingerprint scanner. It’s accurate and fast to unlock. The SIM card slot at the top can accommodate either two SIM cards or one SIM card and a microSD card. Meanwhile, the single loudspeaker, USB-C port, and audio jack are at the bottom.

Overall, we love this phone’s premium look and are satisfied with how it feels solid to hold.

Display & multimedia

The vivo Y36 comes with a 6.64-inch IPS display that has up to 1080p resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. The 240Hz gaming sampling rate further enhances the touch responsiveness of the display. The bezels are slim. but the bottom part is slightly thicker than the rest. There’s also a punch-hole notch for the front camera.

The colors on the Y36’s screen are vibrant, almost oversaturated, by default. If you want to adjust it to your liking, just go to the phone’s settings. You can select between standard, bright, and pro modes, and there’s an option as well to tweak the color temperature.

Video resolution on YouTube is capped at 1080p at 60fps while streaming sites are allowed up to Full HD settings. These should be enough for casual bingeing. The 90Hz refresh rate ensures smooth scrolling and switching between apps, plus it gives a bit of a boost to the overall gaming experience.

One of the things we’d love to have here are stereo speakers as there’s only a single speaker at the bottom of the device. Nevertheless, the inclusion of an audio jack could be a favorable trade-off for some.

Camera

vivo opted for a different camera setup in the Y36. Unlike the Y35, the Y36 doesn’t have an ultrawide lens. Instead, it sports a dual rear camera system composed of a 50MP main shooter and a 2MP depth sensor.

The camera quality is great under good lighting with the resulting photos having good contrast and details. The autofocus isn’t as fast as we’d like it to be, so taking pictures while moving or capturing moving subjects is a hit or miss.

Photos taken in low-light settings suffers just a bit but is still decent overall. We missed having an ultra-wide lens at certain times, but it’s not a huge deal breaker for us.

Video quality is the same as photos, meaning they come out great when shot in well-lit conditions. The resolution is up to Full HD at 30fps.

Performance

The vivo Y36 comes with a 6nm Snapdragon 680 processor. It is paired with 8GB RAM with Turbo Memory Booster and 256GB internal storage, which can be expanded up to 1TB via microSD.

Playing Call of Duty: Mobile and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with graphics and refresh rates set to high levels produced mixed results. It was an overall smooth experience for the latter, but we hit minor snags for the former. Still, the overall experience is good; for a better experience, we suggest choosing low to mid-graphics settings. That said, casual smartphone use is great and lag-free.

The Y36 packs a large 5000mAh battery that has fast-charging capabilities. It lasted us a day of continuous use, including browsing, streaming videos and music, and playing games. Using the bundled 44W charger, this phone allowed us to charge from 15% to 100% in under an hour.

Pricing & availability

The vivo Y36 is now available in all vivo concept stores and kiosks nationwide for P12,999. It’s also available for purchase on the following online platforms:

Speed says

The vivo Y36 goes big in a lot of aspects—8GB RAM, an expandable 256GB internal storage, a solid 5000mAh battery, and a huge display with up to 90Hz refresh rate. Its solid, premium-feeling build is also a plus. We’d love it if the processor had a little more power when playing intensive games, but overall, it worked smoothly and fast for all other computing tasks. The camera takes decent photos, but we missed having the ultrawide mode on some occasions.
