Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has taken a major step toward more sustainable motorsports by becoming the first automotive manufacturer in the country to test low-carbon biofuels in a local racing series.
The initiative debuted during the second Race Weekend of the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) Philippine Cup at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga, where the competition doubled as a “rolling laboratory” for evaluating alternative fuels under the demanding conditions of motorsports.
Race-prepared Toyota Vios models competing in the one-make series ran on an E20 bioethanol blend, while the Tamaraw race vehicles used a B5 coco-biodiesel blend. Toyota said the tests will help assess the fuels’ performance, efficiency, and reliability before sharing the results with government agencies and industry stakeholders to support wider adoption.
Toyota said wider adoption of locally produced biofuels could help reduce the Philippines’ reliance on imported petroleum, strengthen energy security, and create additional demand for locally grown coconut and sugarcane feedstocks.
According to Toyota, around three-quarters of its gasoline-powered Toyota and Lexus models are already compatible with E20 fuel, while all Toyota diesel vehicles can run on B5 biodiesel.
The biofuel program forms part of Toyota’s multi-pathway strategy toward carbon neutrality, which promotes multiple technologies and energy sources rather than relying on a single solution for cleaner mobility.
Aside from the sustainability initiative, Race Weekend 2 featured the Vios and Tamaraw one-make races, the GR50 Challenge, and car club fun runs.
The TGR Philippine Cup resumes with Race Weekend 3 at the Batangas Racing Circuit from August 13 to 15, before concluding the season at Clark International Speedway on September 10 to 12.
