Plastic waste is a massive global issue, and it’s crucial that we address the problem by taking action in various ways, such as reducing, reusing, and recycling plastics.

One hotel that’s leading the charge in making a positive change is Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA. They’ve taken a significant step forward by becoming the first hotel in the Philippines to partner with Diversey’s PlasticShreds Sustainable Program.

This plastic upcycling program by Diversey, an American provider of cleaning and hygiene products, seeks to reduce plastic waste in the hotel service business by tackling the problem of excessive plastic use.

The program takes single-use plastic wastes and shreds them into plastic chips. These chips are then used as a gravel replacement for the mixing of building materials used in horizontal structures such as basketball or badminton courts, village roads, pavement, or simply to fill in potholes.

PlasticShreds is the latest Diversey program that Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA has embraced. Previously, the two had worked together to run Soap For Hope, which reprocesses used hotel guests soaps into new soap bars, and Linens For Life, which repurposes end-of-life hotel linen into new products such as face masks, school uniforms for children, kitchen aprons, and tote bags.

“These programs not only protect the environment by diverting tons of hotel discards from landfills, incinerators and oceans, but also help local communities by enhancing their livelihoods as well as providing them items that protect them such as soaps and face masks,” shared Stefan Phang, Global Director of ESG & Creating Shared Value at Diversey, Inc.

“We are proud to partner with Diversey in various sustainable initiatives and this latest synergy is our commitment to reduce single use plastic and environmental impact in our local community. We plan to upcycle these shredded plastic chips and produce planter boxes and miniature pots for hotel use and guest amenity,” said Ann Olalo, General Manager of Park Inn by Radisson North EDSA.
