To further help advance the digital transformation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Alibaba Cloud is supporting the ongoing Winter Youth Olympics Gangwon 2024 (Gangwon 2024) with its latest cloud technologies.

As the IOC’s official cloud services partner, Alibaba Cloud aims to enhance the efficiency of the Winter Youth Olympic Games and increase engagement for sports fans.

Gangwon 2024, Asia’s first Winter Youth Olympic Games, utilizes Alibaba Cloud’s secure and scalable cloud infrastructure for critical operations like the staff management portal and ticketing system. This move is expected to optimize efficiency and elevate the engagement experience for participants, including staff, volunteers, spectators, and sports fans worldwide.

Gangwon 2024, taking place in South Korea’s northernmost province from January 19 to February 1, brings together 1,900 young athletes aged 15 to 18 from 81 countries and regions. These athletes participate in 15 disciplines, including Alpine Skiing and Curling.

Scalable and robust cloud infrastructure

Alibaba Cloud responded to the Gangwon 2024 Organizing Committee’s need for a streamlined coordination platform by establishing a Staff and Volunteer Management (SVM) portal. This portal, hosted on Alibaba Cloud, features customized functions such as training, announcement notifications through the web-app and SMS, and scheduling and attendance management for over 5000 staff and volunteers.

Also deployed is a Ticketing System on Alibaba Cloud that ensures uninterrupted services, even during high-traffic situations such as ticket sales campaigns and on-site ticket checking for events.

Spreading the Olympic spirit through innovative cloud technology

To ignite the Olympic spirit among younger generations, the Gangwon 2024 Organizing Committee adapted cloud technologies to provide a unique digital experience.

At Gangwon 2024, a cloud-based digital flame was introduced, ‘lit’ alongside the Olympic flame during the Opening Ceremony. This digital flame, in a physical “cauldron” at the Olympic Park, adapts to real-time weather conditions in Gangwon, changing its backdrop accordingly. Alibaba Cloud’s content management system handles rendering, storage, management, and presentation of the live content.

Additionally, OBS Cloud, a collaboration between Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) and Alibaba Cloud, efficiently transmits high-definition live signals of competitions to Media Rights Holders (MRHs) through Live Cloud, a cost-effective alternative to traditional methods.

The organizing committee also partnered with Alibaba Cloud to host an Alibaba Cloud Hackathon, where young tech enthusiasts were tasked to create a web-based metaverse application that addresses a real-world challenges while incorporating brand elements of Gangwon 2024 and Alibaba Cloud.
