In response to the growing use of generative AI in creating content, YouTube is introducing a new content-labeling tool in Creator Studio to promote transparency and trust between creators and their viewers.

The tool, now part of Creator Studio, requires creators to disclose when realistic content that could easily be mistaken as real is made using altered or synthetic media, like generative AI.

Examples of such content requiring disclosure include digitally replacing faces, altering footage of real events or places, and generating realistic scenes depicting fictional major events.

Labels indicating the use of altered or synthetic media will be prominently displayed in both the expanded description and within the video player, especially for sensitive topics like health or news. This rollout will occur gradually across all YouTube platforms in the coming weeks, ensuring consistency and clarity for viewers.

Google and YouTube recognize the growing need for viewers to distinguish between altered or synthetic content and authentic material. This initiative builds upon previous disclosure requirements and labels introduced in November, reinforcing the platform’s dedication to combating misinformation.

However, Google also acknowledges the legitimate uses of generative AI in the creative process, such as generating scripts or enhancing productivity. In such cases, disclosure is not required.
