Xiaomi Philippines recently hosted a Xiaomi Masterclass for Mobile Photography for students of San Beda University, members of the media, and the Xiaomi community.

The “Story in Sight: A Masterclass in Mobile Visual Storytelling” event was led by award-winning journalist Atom Araullo and renowned photographer Jonathan Hodder, who gave valuable insights on visual storytelling based on their personal and professional experiences.

Araullo covered the basics of visual storytelling from his years as a reporter. He shared photos he took as a child and as a seasoned journalist covering stories around the Philippines and abroad.

He talked about photojournalism rules that are applicable to capturing moments in time, whether he’s on the field or just taking snapshots during his personal time.

“The best camera is the camera you have with you. If you’re a documentary photographer, you usually want to take a photo of the moment and you don’t want your camera to disturb the scene. Mobile phones are discreet, you can carry them anywhere, and they don’t disturb the scene,” he said.

On the topic of telling cohesive stories through mobile photography, Jonathan talked about how visually impactful images can catch people’s attention and make them feel something. He showcased stunning shots of spontaneous scenes around the world to showcase people’s everyday lives, and provided tips on how budding photographers could achieve this. “If you’re taking photos of truth, you must be true to yourself,” Jonathan advised.

Both speakers offered helpful tips on maximizing the features of the Xiaomi 13T to capture everyday masterpieces. The Xiaomi 13T is equipped with a 50MP rear camera that can capture details in high definition. Thanks to a Mediatek Dimensity 8200 Ultra chipset and a 5000mAh battery, mobile photographers can shoot smoothly without worrying about any lag or battery drainage.

The Xiaomi Mobile Masterclass is part of a three-pronged series to showcase the talents of young photographers using the Xiaomi 13T Series. It kicked off with a Xiaomi 13T Series Photowalk in Intramuros on November 17.

With the theme “Story in Sight,” the immersive photowalk challenged 10 select students from San Beda University to showcase their mobile photography prowess in capturing Intramuros’ most scenic and authentic moments. It also enabled them to unleash their creative freedom in capturing and telling meaningful stories in every shot.

The student-participants went to various historic locations within Manila’s walled city, including Baluarte de Dilao, Plaza de Roma, Plaza Moriones, Fort Santiago, and San Agustin Church.

The Xiaomi Masterclass series will conclude with an exhibit showcasing the shots taken by the young photographers from San Beda University. This further reiterates Xiaomi’s mission to inspire and enable up-and-coming creatives that can capture everyday moments and tell compelling stories with their smartphones.
