A unique connection between two point guards from different basketball worlds took center stage when PBA star Scottie Thompson met Memphis Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. during the vivo x NBA Meet & Greet at SM Megamall on July 30.
The encounter carried personal significance for Thompson, who revealed that he was named after Pippen Jr.’s father, NBA legend and six-time champion Scottie Pippen, because of his father’s admiration for the Chicago Bulls icon.
“It’s truly an honor to meet Scotty. I’m sure my dad would be very proud,” Thompson shared during an onstage conversation with host KC Montero.
Pippen Jr. was equally surprised to learn the story behind Thompson’s name.
“Definitely cool. He’s a cool dude and a super accomplished player. Just hearing all the accolades he’s achieved is surreal. It’s also crazy that he was named after my dad and now, years later, we’re both here together. It’s really cool to meet someone like that,” he said.
The event brought together two accomplished players whose careers have taken different paths but have been shaped by the same values of perseverance, discipline, and leadership.
Pippen Jr. reflected on his journey from Vanderbilt University to the NBA, where he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers as a two-way player in 2022 before working his way through the G League and eventually earning a roster spot with the Memphis Grizzlies.
“The main thing for me is confidence. In college, I was the best player on my team, but when I got to the NBA, you kind of start at the bottom. Just working hard every day, instilling confidence in yourself, knowing you belong, and believing you should be there really helped me,” he shared.
Thompson, meanwhile, spoke about the work ethic that helped him rise from the collegiate ranks to become a PBA Most Valuable Player, multiple-time champion, and one of the league’s top floor generals.
“For me, I just keep pushing myself every single day. I keep working hard. It shows in my game because what I do in practice is the same thing I bring onto the court,” Thompson said.
The afternoon concluded with both players thanking Filipino fans for their passion for basketball, capping off a memorable meeting between two point guards whose lives became connected long before they shared the same stage.
