With fuel prices continuing to surge across the Philippines, commuters are gaining access to a more dependable alternative: electric taxis. Filipino electric vehicle taxi operators—including EV Taxi Corporation, EnviroCab, TaxiKo Transport Services, KateMikylla, CMAIII, ManilaTrans Taxi Corp, and Sun & Bin Transportation Corporation—have activated hundreds of hybrid and fully electric units on the GrabTaxi Electric platform.
For everyday passengers, the shift comes at a critical time. In early March alone, the Department of Energy flagged possible pump price hikes of P17.50 to P24.25 per liter for diesel and P7 to P13 per liter for gasoline. As operators grapple with rising costs, commuters often face fewer available units or inconsistent service.
Electric taxis aim to change that equation. Operators say that EVs can run at 75% to 87% lower cost per kilometer compared to combustion-engine vehicles. This cost stability allows fleets to stay on the road longer without passing on sudden fuel surcharges to passengers, helping maintain predictable, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board-regulated metered fares.
The integration with Grab’s platform also improves accessibility. By connecting to millions of users, EV taxi operators benefit from steady demand that street-hailing alone cannot guarantee. Many report that more than 80% of their daily trips now come through GrabTaxi Electric bookings—translating into better vehicle availability and shorter wait times for riders in busy urban areas.
The initiative aligns with the goals of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, which encourages the adoption of electric public transport through incentives and streamlined franchise processing by the LTFRB. Regulators have signaled strong support for electrifying taxi fleets as part of a broader push toward cleaner, more sustainable urban mobility.
To book GrabTaxi Electric, users simply need to open the Grab app, enter their route, and select the “Electric taxi” option under the Taxi category. Fares follow standard metered rates, ensuring no premium for choosing a greener ride.
GrabTaxi Electric is currently in beta, rolling out across Metro Manila hubs including Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Pateros, Marikina, Manila, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Pasay, and select areas of Paranaque and Quezon City. Grab has also announced plans to expand its eco-mobility strategy to regional cities, including Cebu and Davao, as EV taxi adoption accelerates nationwide.
The multi-operator deployment on GrabTaxi Electric represents the demand side of the electric transition: proving that EV taxis can earn on-platform at commercially viable levels. Grab Philippines is also working across its broader ecosystem to make electric vehicles more accessible for the next wave of drivers and operators who want to make the switch.
