Finding halal food online could soon become easier for Muslim consumers in Davao City, as Grab Philippines rolls out enhanced search and filtering features designed to make halal dining options easier to identify.
The initiative is part of a partnership between Grab Philippines and the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Region XI aimed at making halal food discovery more accurate and reliable for consumers ordering through GrabFood.
“Our vision is to build an inclusive platform that empowers consumers to make food choices with absolute confidence,” said RJ Cabaluna, Grab Philippines Vice President for Cities. “That means going beyond basic food delivery and equipping our app with the right filters and verification systems needed by the Muslim community.”
Under the initiative, NCMF endorsement is required before Davao City-based halal merchants can be appropriately tagged on GrabFood. This means searches for “halal” will return merchants vetted by halal certification bodies, giving consumers greater assurance when choosing where to order.
The universal “Philippine Halal” logo will also appear on merchant icons as an additional identifier. Meanwhile, Muslim-owned merchants may display a “Muslim-owned” tag following NCMF endorsement, providing another way for users to identify relevant establishments.
Grab is also undertaking a cleanup of inaccurate or unsupported uses of “halal” in restaurant names to strengthen the integrity of its platform.
While the immediate focus remains on platform enhancements, Grab and NCMF Region XI are also exploring future collaborations, including halal merchant education, consumer-awareness campaigns, and capacity-building sessions to further support Davao’s local halal ecosystem.
