Major concert events headlined by international superstars like Taylor Swift and Coldplay have not only thrilled audiences but also provided significant economic boosts to host countries.

These countries—with bigger, better, and more competitive concert venues—have reaped economic benefits, drawing huge crowds and stimulating spending. For example, when Taylor Swift performed in Singapore’s National Stadium, it attracted fans from around the region, who spent money on tickets, travel, and accommodation. Similar benefits were seen in Japan and Australia when she performed there.

Singapore’s strategy for a Southeast Asia exclusive Swift performance caught the attention of neighboring countries. This move sparked conversations and brought to light what the Philippines can improve on in terms of concert venues.

1. Location is key. The Philippines doesn’t lack in big venues. In fact, it boasts of venues that can rival Singapore’s National Stadium and Japan’s Tokyo Dome. Accessibility to the location as well as public transportation and nearby commercial establishments are key.

2. Concert experience. Singapore’s National Stadium boasts cutting-edge features such as the world’s largest free-spanning dome, a retractable roof, and comfort cooling technology. These innovations, along with the stadium’s strategic location and efficiency, provide positive and immersive experiences for enthusiasts and concert fans. Filipino concertgoers are hoping the Philippines can replicate such a venue and experience.

3. World-class concert amenities and facilities. Accessing the venue’s amenities and facilities should offer a premium music experience for concert enthusiasts or convenience in a sporting event.

Take for example the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena, developed by SM Prime in 2012. This flexible indoor arena has become a go-to venue for various events, providing a unique concert experience. With seating for 20,000 people, it has hosted exciting sports events, memorable OPM shows, and unforgettable performances by international superstars.

Meanwhile, the SMDC Festival Grounds in Parañaque City is an enormous outdoor venue that can accommodate at least 50,000 people. Ed Sheeran and Rivermaya were among the performers that have graced the stage recently.

4. Achieving Filipinos’ concert dreams. One of the most forward-looking plans of SM Prime is its 360-hectare smart city aimed at becoming the country’s hub for entertainment and sports events. This project includes a larger-capacity venue with enhanced infrastructure that could attract renowned entertainment figures.

The centerpiece will be a stadium and concert arena with an estimated capacity of 70,000, connected to a destination area called Central Park. This arena is envisioned to be the country’s largest concert venue with world-class facilities and sustainable features, comparable to other venues worldwide. Once completed, Filipinos can enjoy top-tier performances without having to travel abroad.

Filipinos are undeniably passionate about entertainment shows, ranking fourth in concert spending in Asia-Pacific, as reported by Visa. By investing in modern, smart, and accessible concert venues, Filipino concert enthusiasts can enjoy live performances conveniently and comfortably. Moreover, such venues can boost economic benefits by encouraging local spending in retail, tourism, and hospitality—all of which will benefit the country’s national and local economies.
