Slow charging and poor low-temperature charging performance have long plagued electric vehicles—but BYD is aiming to change that with its newly unveiled Blade Battery and FLASH Charging technology.
The company claims its latest technology sets a new benchmark. Vehicles equipped with the upgraded battery can charge from 10% to 70% State of Charge (SOC) in just five minutes and reach 97% in nine minutes. Even in freezing conditions as low as -30°C, charging times increase by only about three minutes compared to room temperature—an issue that has long frustrated EV users in colder regions.
Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD, said these improvements are designed to ease “range anxiety” and reduce long queues at charging stations, especially during peak travel periods. Slow charging and winter inefficiency have remained key barriers to wider EV adoption despite rapid market growth.
The second-generation Blade Battery also delivers a 5% increase in energy density while maintaining safety standards. Paired with lightweight vehicle designs, it enables models like the Denza Z9GT to achieve ranges exceeding 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. Enhanced thermal management systems help control heat and improve overall battery performance.
Supporting the battery is BYD’s FLASH Charging infrastructure, featuring chargers capable of delivering up to 1,500kW of power. The system includes energy storage technology to reduce strain on local power grids, positioning it as a more sustainable large-scale solution.
BYD also plans to build 20,000 FLASH Charging stations across China by the end of 2026, and roll out globally at scale. The stations will be open to all users, reflecting the company’s push to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more accessible electric mobility worldwide.
