Apple has announced that it is discontinuing the iPod touch—the last remaining model in the company’s celebrated line of media players—and with it the iPod line itself.
The company said that the product will be available through the Apple website, Apple Stores, and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.
The iPod was released in 2001, and was the first MP3 player capable of storing 1,000 songs. Aside from the touch, other versions of the iPod included the mini, nano, and shuffle.
The first model of the iPod was revealed by Apple boss Steve Jobs in 2001. The invitation for the launch event read: “Hint: It’s not a Mac.”
The original iPod touch, on the other hand, was launched in 2007—the same year as the first iPhone. It had mostly the same hardware and software as the original iPhone, save for the parts that made phone calls.
Today, “carrying [thousands of] songs in your pocket” has been integrated across Apple’s product line—from iPhone and Apple Watch to iPad and Mac—along with access to more than 90 million songs and over 30,000 playlists available via Apple Music.
