After nearly a decade of rumors, Apple has finally folded the iPhone into a new form. Meet the iPhone Duo, Apple’s first-ever foldable smartphone that opens into a 7.6-inch display while still fitting comfortably in a pocket when closed.
When opened, iPhone Duo reveals Apple’s largest iPhone display yet: a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display. Fold it shut, and the device becomes a compact phone with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Both share the same aspect ratio, allowing content to scale proportionally for a seamless transition between screens. They also feature ProMotion, Always On, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. A premium nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections, minimizes the crease’s visibility, and provides a smooth surface.
The inner display also houses a new FaceTime camera that stays hidden when it’s not being used, keeping the expansive screen free of interruptions. And for those who like to write or draw on their devices, Apple Pencil with USB-C support is coming to iPhone Duo later this year.
For a phone designed to fold, durability is understandably a big deal. iPhone Duo uses a grade 5 titanium enclosure, with Ceramic Shield protecting the back and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front. The latter offers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation. The phone is also IP68-rated, giving it protection against splashes, water, and dust.
The folding mechanism is built for repeated use, too. Its precision hinge contains more than 100 components that work together to control how the phone opens and closes while supporting the center of the display. Inside, reinforced structures, support ribs, ceramic fiber inserts, and a titanium plate add further rigidity.
Apple has also paid particular attention to the folding screen itself. A scratch-resistant coating and nano-textured cover layer help protect the surface, while high-strength glass, custom adhesives, and a titanium plate underneath the display are designed to reduce stress as the screen bends.
The foldable iPhone packs a 48MP Fusion Main camera with 2x optical-quality telephoto zoom, alongside a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide for macro shots and a Center Stage front camera.
For video, it can shoot 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision, with Cinematic effects, Audio Mix, and 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse also on board.
With iOS 27, the larger inner display enables new multitasking features, including Split View for running two apps side by side. Users can also open two windows of the same app, such as Safari, quickly switch between apps, and save app pairs for later.
StandBy can turn iPhone Duo into a photo frame, widget hub, or clock on either display—even when it isn’t charging.
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, paired with an advanced thermal management system and custom vapor chamber to help keep performance steady.
Its dual-battery design places one battery on each side of the device, allowing them to work together while maximizing capacity. iPhone Duo offers up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer display, or 24 hours of usage when both are used equally.
When it’s time to recharge, fast charging can take the battery to 50 percent in around 20 minutes, while MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging reaches 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
