A story rooted in history and heart
Eisenberg’s creative journey for A Real Pain began with a ‘strange revelation’ during a trip to Poland with his now-wife. While exploring the country, they visited the tiny house in Kranystaw where his aunt Doris had lived before the Holocaust displaced her entire family. “Had the war not happened, this is where I would be living,” Eisenberg remembers thinking. “What would my life be like? Who would I be?”
Two decades later, Eisenberg returned to that house, this time as the director, writer, and co-star of A Real Pain. He plays David, a New Yorker and young father who, with his cousin Benji (Kieran Culkin), embarks on a Polish Holocaust history tour funded by their late grandmother’s inheritance. Guided by the charismatic James (Will Sharpe), the cousins reconnect amidst the somber landscapes, confronting the family tragedies that continue to shape their lives.
