Baby Panchi—also known as Punch—the adorable macaque from Ichikawa Zoo in Ichikawa, Japan, has captured hearts around the world with a story that’s as touching as it is unusual.

Shortly after he was born, the young macaque was rejected by his mother. Zoo caretakers stepped in to help raise him, but it was an unexpected companion that became Panchi’s constant source of comfort: the DJUNGELSKOG Orangutan Soft Toy from IKEA.

Photos and videos of the tiny monkey cuddling the plush toy quickly went viral, showing how he formed a strong emotional bond not only with the stuffed orangutan but also with the patient zookeepers caring for him.

Inspired by Panchi’s story, IKEA Philippines is launching Project Panchi Akap Pabalik, a campaign that turns a simple hug into meaningful support for communities and wildlife.

Running throughout March and April 2026, the initiative aims to donate up to P1 million from soft toy sales. For every soft toy purchased during the campaign period, P50 will go toward IKEA’s initiatives in partnership with Better World organization.

The project hopes to extend the comfort that Panchi found in his plush companion beyond the zoo and into real-world causes. Funds raised will support the welfare of vulnerable children, mental well-being initiatives, and animal conservation efforts, including the preservation of the Philippines’ iconic tarsier.
