Grab Philippines and its motorcycle taxi partner MOVE IT are set to transform the ride-hailing industry by introducing evidence-based, behavior-focused assessment and training programs for drivers, in collaboration with the Ateneo Bulatao Center for Psychological Services.
This pioneering initiative aims to move beyond traditional metrics like driving skills and police records, by incorporating behavioral and cognitive factors that influence driver performance. The partnership will develop a more holistic approach to driver engagement, utilizing tools and policies grounded in psychological research.
The program, scheduled for pilot implementation in the second quarter of 2025, will utilize qualitative and quantitative research methods, including interviews, focus groups, and data analysis, to understand driver behavior, socio-demographic backgrounds, and passenger perceptions.
“It is encouraging to see leaders in the ride-hailing industry take proactive steps to ensure that services provided to Filipino commuters prioritize safety,” said Maria Lourdes Mesa, Director for Research at the Ateneo Bulatao Center.
“By integrating a behavior-focused approach into the assessment processes, we are proactively addressing the potential for drivers to act contrary to safety standards due to any existing psychological predispositions,” she added.
The first phase of the program, focused on data gathering and research, is currently underway in Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, involving driver and rider-partners from both Grab and MOVE IT.
