What started as a simple inspiration from a small, unmanned book-sharing shelf in Australia has blossomed into a vibrant community hub in the heart of Metro Manila.
Inspired by this concept, Sheeren Sy, a Singaporean architect affiliated with SM Supermalls, dreamed of bringing a similar initiative to the Philippines.
Recognizing the spirit of bayanihan—a Filipino value that emphasizes communal unity and cooperation —Sy envisioned creating a dynamic space that fosters learning, creativity, and community engagement.
Launched in December 2020 at SM Aura, Book Nook offers more than just a collection of books. It’s a cozy space where visitors can immerse themselves in the joy of reading, donate or swap books, and connect with like-minded individuals. With over 3,000 books and counting, the open library on the third level of SM Aura has become a beloved destination for bookworms of all ages.
Beyond its core purpose, Book Nook has emerged as a platform for various initiatives. It has hosted book launches, workshops, and events that cater to diverse interests.
Partnerships with organizations like Camerahaus and GMA Network have allowed Book Nook to reach a wider audience and contribute to literacy initiatives.
In collaboration with Camerahaus, Book Nook organized a VlogCon to equip content creators with essential knowledge.
Meanwhile, GMA Network donated copies of the illustrated children’s book Si Gren, Ang Kaibigan Kong Alien, a companion book to GMA’s TV series My Guardian Alien.
As a testament to the success and growing popularity of this unique concept, Book Nook is set to open a new branch at The Podium on August 15.
